Local Trains In PA

The first of many small towns south of Taylor Yard is called Old Forge.  For those familiar with the area, this scene is a stone's throw for Jitty Joe's Ice Cream, a definite must after a day of train chasing!  Here we see a pair of CP SD-40-2's bracketing a GATX lease unit.  (8/95)

In a classic Christmas card scene, a CP GP-38 wheels a local freight, complete with caboose, through the town of Moosic. This view is from a small town park between the tracks and a local side street.   (3/96)

The town of Avoca offers several vantage points from which to shoot the former D&H main.  From an old coal stripping pile we see a southbound with four SD-40's in various Canadian Pacific paint schemes.  (4/99)

About a half mile down the track, (still in the town of Avoca) the old D&H main passes under the former Erie Railroad Wyoming Division.  This former double track mainline is now a weed-choked industrial track, but still sees service by area shortline Luzurne & Susquehana.  (4/99)

In the town of Duryea we see a southbound coal train lead by a CP SD-40-2, a GATX lease unit and several  Norfolk Southern engines.  These coal trains, which originate in West Virginia often use NS motive power exclusively.  The former D&H frieght station is visible in the upper right corner and survives as a private residence.  The former passenger station survives also, as a pool supply store.  (2/94)

Taken from the exact location as above, but looking southward we see a northbound coal train with a former Kansas City Southern SD-40-2 leading a former Union Pacific unit.  The mid 1990's saw many of these units aquired by the CP and for a short time there was no telling what colors would show up on any given train.  Eventually they were repainted into the ever-present "Action Red".  (2/94)

The final stop on our tour of the former D&H main is Dupont Junction.  Here we see a southbound train crossing over to the Rading and Northern.  The track in the forground is known as the "Sunbury Line".  A reltively rare former Norfolk and Western high-nose SD-40 is bracketed by the common low-nose version.  (4/97)
